The availability of a full range of vowel symbols, however, makes complete accuracy possible. Symbol shorthands are just what they sound like, completely new written representations for English. Classical antiquity[ edit ] The earliest known indication of shorthand systems is from the Parthenon in Ancient Greecewhere a mid-4th century BC marble slab was found. Script-geometric, or semi-script, shorthands are based on the ellipse. In order to have a less complex writing system, a syllabic shorthand script was sometimes used. I then looked into shorthand. It also made it much harder to learn the alphabet because some letters are replaced with other letters without rhyme or reason. It is the exact opposite of printing alphabetic characters by hand; handwritten text is readable, but blocky and slow to write, while Gregg Shorthand is highly cursive and fast, but only marginally readable.

Experience alone will authorize any deviation from the text-book forms. No changes have been made in the Notehand principles in the 2nd edition. Dictionaries are available to show you how to outline tens of thousands of words, but the need for such dictionaries should tell you something of the inherent ambiguities of the system. At first, the dictation should be slow to permit the making of careful outlines. Gregg had studied not only the geometric English systems, but also the German Stolze stenography, a script shorthand. After the 11th century, however, they were mostly forgotten.

Shorthand systems based on alphabetic characters can always fall back on longhand where clarity is important or when you might forget what an abbreviation stands for, such as "RCWs" standing for "red-cockaded woodpeckers.

However, the most successful system of this type was Gregg shorthandintroduced by John Robert Gregg in Although Gregg Shorthand is nominally phonetic, in practice outlines sometimes follow the sound of a word, and sometimes its spelling.

You need to fully absorb the word-building principles first; speed comes from them. Start at random places in the text and begin reading too.

Most systems consist of rules for abbreviating words together with memorized abbreviations. However, since the invention of mechanical stenography, the form lost its appeal to the public.

Vowels are eliminated unless they are the first letter of the word or the last letter. Normal punctuation symbols can be used which adds to readability. For example the "sh" sound can be spelled 13 different ways: ocean, machine, special, pshaw, sure, schist, conscience, nauseous, she, tension, issue, Personal shorthand book, nation.

James Hill, an instructor of Pitman Shorthand, developed it in After she took the training course and brought the textbook with her, I got curious about shorthand.

It is similar to Gregg in that it is a scrolling style which omits vowels. Script-geometric, or semi-script, shorthands are based on the ellipse. However, there are also many important differences between Ford Improved Shorthand and other systems.

Spend five minutes doing this. This new material deals with such subjects as psychology, literature, sociology, history, and others that the student is likely to study when he goes to college.

One drawback of Shelton's system was that there was no way to distinguish long and short vowels or diphthongs; so the b-a-t sequence could mean "bat", or "bait", or "bate", while b-o-t might mean "boot", or "bought", or "boat". If you do not keep your writing scaled the same it becomes hard to read.
